Media research and social inequalities

A meta-analysis on dimensions of inequality in studies on the youths’ media use

Abstract

Young people are generally considered pioneers in the use of digital media. In the positive interpretation, „digital natives“ are considered particularly media-savvy, in the negative perspective they are addicted to the media. Both camps neglect the fact that young media users are a consistently heterogeneous and diverse group. Such sweeping designations and blanket attributions belie phenomena of digital inequalities and hinder professional action in media eduation and social work.

In a first step, the article presents influential German-language studies on the media use of young people, taking into account their respective methodological backgrounds, and summarizes selected results. Subsequently, the significance and scope of the studies are classified with regard to the connection between media use and social inequalities. Furthermore, the methodological narrowing of the studies in comparison with participatory research is critically discussed.
