This study aims to explore and describe the emancipatory potentials experienced by critical systemic psychotherapists in their practice. In therapy, critical systemic therapists face the challenge of balancing the support for their clients' emancipation from societal norms with the pressure to conform to these norms. The research question, whether systemic therapy help individuals recognize power structures such as societal and social dependencies and support them in breaking free from these structures, thereby improving their living conditions. To explore this cause five guided interviews with critical systemic therapists and one group discussion were conducted. The data was analyzed using the Gioia methodology one rigid form of the Grounded Theory approach. The material was then interpreted by the point of view of emancipatory intended Kritische Psychologie.
The evaluation’s results indicate a very limited emancipatory potential of systemic therapies. The limiting factors are the theoretical concepts which impede partisanship/solidarity with oppressed individuals as well as the health policies and societal conditions. However, the interviewees stressed the potential of the systemic attitudes of being critical towards pathologizing psychological conditions, to be empowering and useful for discriminatory informed psychotherapies.
