Zusammenfassung auf englisch (bis zu 1600 Zeichen inkl. Leerzeichen)* Using a case study by Loetz and Müller (2023), similarities and differences between psychoanalysis and Critical Psychology are highlighted. Critical Psychology adopts Freud's concepts of defense and the unconscious, but distances itself from his drive theory, his conservative social theory and his tendency to explain current neurotic conflicts in a reductionist way from early childhood experiences. Instead, it emphasizes the relevance of current conditions and power relations. The case study is about a student who has seemingly inexplicable learning problems during her studies and who regularly gets herself into serious trouble by missing re-registration deadlines and neglecting to pay rent. The essay argues that an explanation requires taking into account both social conditions and biographical dimensions, especially phenomena of repetition and transference.
