In this overview text, the thematic profile of the collected volume "Critical Psychology, Psychotherapy, and Emancipatory Practice" is presented. It discusses questions regarding the emancipatory potentials and possible entanglements of psychotherapy in societal power structures in relation to Critical Psychology. It is demonstrated that psychological distress is also caused by neoliberal structures, and the role psychotherapy can play without individualizing structural societal problems is examined. The first part highlights the theoretical constitution of Critical Psychology in relation to therapy and explores how emancipatory approaches can be implemented in practice. The second part addresses various therapeutic approaches—psychoanalysis, behavior therapy, systemic therapies, and solution-focused approaches—and examines their potentials in the light of Critical Psychology. The third part presents alternative approaches that go beyond classical therapy settings, such as the Polyclinic, Collective Self-Understanding, and the Activist Sofa. The concluding part reflects on the theoretical and practical implications of a socially critical psychotherapy that is oriented towards the Marxist framework.
