There are increasing signs that human society is regressing to pre-Enlightenment times. This should motivate us to reflect on the causes of human irrationality and destructiveness and the answers offered by psychoanalysis. While Freud believed that human nature must be restrained and is always threatening to break free, the explanatory models of E. Fromm, L. Wurmser, A. Gruen, and D. W. Winnicott focus on a process of splitting. If we depart from Freud's view that there is “no eradication of evil” and adopt the thesis that self-alienation caused by socio-economic conditions leads to a splitting of the self, then therapeutic consequences ensue.
