Abstract

Socialworkers: self-employed in the social area. Analysis of the actual situation, the problems and the developmental possibilities in Austria. Diploma thesis, submitted at the University of Applied Sciences St. Pölten in May 2006.

This thesis deals with the current situation of social workers who are self-employed in the social sector. The social field includes social work, social pedagogy and the wide area about social skills, social services and support activities. In Austria a notable number of social workers work full-time, part-time are self-employed or work under atypical employment contracts in the social sector. The activities in this field and thus the possibilities and options are manifold (for example: supervision, mediation, training). Selfemployment in the social sector requires professional experience and further education because people-oriented services are a critical factor in the service offers. So far there are no studies in Austria concerning self-employed social workers, their developmental possibilities and the problems in this area. Therefore this thesis gives an overview of the number of social workers who are self-employed in different occupational areas in the social field by means of a quantitative analysis. In addition the different issues of self-employed social workers, their problems and the developmental possibilities are discussed in this paper. Furthermore potential working fields closed to the social sector and future scenarios are presented encouraging further research on this topic.
