Summary
This handbook draws on theories, methods and research on the social foundations of sexual behaviour. Researchers in this field are well aware that using the term „sexuality“ doesn´t make much sense anymore, since nowadays a great variety of very different „sexualities“ exist. In social sciences, this plurality of lifeforms and interaction chains are mirrored by a plurality of research concepts. DeLamater´s and Plante´s book offers a extensive overview about what has been done in the field of the sociology of sexualities, what is currently done, and – between the lines – what could still be done in future research projects.
For a long time, sexualities were considered a subject too indecent for scientitic institutions (that is, outside of the medical discourse). These days are over, and sociology is one of the sciences that benefit most strongly from the inclusion of sexual matters into it´s agenda. The book at hand proves the case. It is essentially a treasure trove filled with interesting facts and useful directions for experts and novices in sociology of sexuality alike. As far as I can tell, a standard reference for many years to come.
