Discussion

The authors offer readers a comprehensible model of an inclusive community. Building on the state of research on inclusion, the idea of becoming an inclusive community is being developed almost in front of the „eyes“ of the readers. Readers are literally being drawn into the process from the idea to the inclusive community. The scientists describe very detailed the milestones of development, the difficulties and clearly state the difficulties of consolidating inclusive living and working in the community of Graben. Issues of need, abuse, volunteerism, all these and other points of discussion are evidence of the open presentation and professional discussion of the experiences in Graben. This book impresses with its scientific character, clear documentation of the design processes as well as the professionally founded reflection of the model project after 3 years. A textbook absolutely worth reading. It is not only easy to read, it is also exemplary for „imitation“. Thus, this book encourages courage and puts the concept of inclusion in the real world.

Summary:

A narrow textbook – with a lot and profound content! Together with the inhabitants of the model community, Plankensteiner/Greißl document what is possible if inclusion is a goal of every single resident, if inclusion moves from the context of the confessions into the everyday life. Inclusion becomes viable in the complex system of community. To convey this „spirit“ is the greatest merit of the authors. This textbook is a „must“ for (aspiring) social scientists as well as for those responsible in cities and communities. After all, the „inclusive community“ should be the start of inclusive practice at the community level.
