Discussion
The training manual „Stress management“ for the long-term reduction of chronic stress level is the fourth revised edition developed by Kaluza. The book aims to provide sustainable support to deal with occupational and private stress in a beneficial way to each one’s health. Over the course of more than 30 years of training experience, three effects could be evaluated: Development of new coping strategies; Reduction of physical ailments; Increasing of physical and mental well-being.
All teaching aids are provided online. In addition, the author refers to the complementary internet-based anti-stress programme „MAURA – my island“ (please note: within the training manual there is no further reference to this programme).
The theoretical, profound introduction is based on the latest scientific findings. With respect to various aspects the content and structure of the programme of health promotion is justified within this first part. At the beginning, the individual and behavioral approach of prevention is combined. The illustrations in the manual are almost self-explanatory. Additionally, the blue highlighted summaries capture the essence of the previous paragraphs and chapters. Although Kaluza’s style of writing is very clear, the statements remain at a high scientific level. The author makes research applicable with his training offer. With which he is always up to date.
The author not only makes an important contribution to the training of multipliers with this technical literature and its programme of health promotion, but also he makes an indirect contribution to health promotion in general.
Conclusion
Prof. Dr. G. Kaluza presents a manual for course instructors that contains two textbooks: a scientific paper on „stress” and a manual with training modules. Part one related to the theme „stress” is as short as possible and as wide as necessary. The manual is hallmarked by its close attention to detail, accuracy in the description of the workflow as well as the provided working material. Both books combined characterize the „psychological programme of health promotion”. For this reason, even ambitious non-trainers find a big variety of special information on the subject of stress and its management (in the broadest sense) in this reference book. Therefore „Stress management“ should become a book for teachers, students and health promotion trainers in the broadest sense for required reading.
