Summary

The neurobiologist and brain researcher Gerald Hüther advises: Away from frontal teaching, rigid curricula and a school system that sorts out. According to Hüther, children must not loose the fun of learning. The prerequisites for this are: a) passion, b) personal responsibility and c) the desire to shape the world together. Lothar Böhnisch looks at the „problem area of school“ from a sociological and socio-educational perspective. He focuses on the real conditions under which school takes place today, the obstacles and problem areas. This perspective is necessary and important because a precise analysis of the current situation must first be made if Hüther's (important and correct!) goals are to be tackled and later achieved. In this context, Böhnisch explains, for example, the conflict between exploitation and personality perspectives, in which the economic-technological call for adaptable competence development is given priority over the emancipatory self-reference of the subject. The teaching school – Böhnisch continues – structurally blocks itself from the social, but is dependent on the integration of social and life-world references for its everyday functioning and modernisation (p. 158). Against this tense background the author presents his diagnosis of the school in the present and his visions of a socially integrative school in the future.
