Summary
Jonah I. Garde's work represents a relevant and fundamental contribution to the critical analysis of the ways in which the category of disability is addressed in the discourse on development in the context of inclusive development. He develops exemplary approaches from non-essentialist perspectives of feminist, queer and postcolonial development research. These are suitable for revealing the theoretical gaps in hegemonic knowledge on development und postulates of inclusion from an intersectional, power-critical perspective. Garde shows the (re)production of colonial-racist and able-bodied patterns of representation inherent in the discourse on inclusive development and he makes it clear that the „white 'non-disabled' body“ (p.98) remains the norm. Jonah I. Garde's book provides a scientifically founded critique of a non-contextualized and, to a certain extent, „naive“ way of addressing poverty, disability, and development. After all, they are entangled in historically grown relations of power and dominance, as well as the development discourse is shaped by colonial-racist continuities. The work encourages critical and reflective questioning and represents a relevant contribution for all those involved in inclusive development work and volunteering services.
