Summary

This book is on the one hand a cultural-scientific view on a phase of growing old and the age and its change in modern societies. We grow old and we are old in another ways than generations before. On the other hand has changed and is still changing the forms, how we all want to live. In connection with this process the imaginations change, how we want to live, when we are old.

The author presents and discusses results of her research of house- and flat-sharing communities of elder peoples. She visited three of these communities in Switzerland and interviewed 14 elder inhabitants in the context of talk situations. She found out, that being old is a construction of the interview partners against the background of social definitions und constructions of a society. And the life together in a house- or flat-sharing community is based on certain imaginations, hopes, wishes but also fears. To live together means to share living spaces, rooms, tasks, communications and meeting together as well in a dense space of a flat or in sharing common rooms in the flat or in a house. The author has a critical view on the processes which are connected with this life together and asks which factors of a biography and of the former individual and family life are responsible, that people decide for living the last phase of their life in common shared flats or houses.
