Summary
The “person-centered approach” has the problem of not wanting to accept neuroscience as part of medicine as a framework for orientation and reference: “neuropathic ideology” and thus denial of the causal relationship between brain and behavior (Kitwood 2000). As their own value standards (e.g. “new culture”) are not compatible with empirical science, parallel structures similar to those of “alternative medicine” (e.g. homeopathy) emerge. In the reviewer's opinion, such circumstances should not be permitted in the area of dementia care, as dementia patients in nursing homes cannot independently escape the patterns of action of “person-centered care”.
