Summary
The merit of the book is the instructive and emotionally moving portrayal of the life of Maurice Windmüller and its embedding in contemporary history. Especially at a time when contemporary witnesses are only available to a limited extent and the temporal distance to the generation of perpetrators and victims seems to make the events fade from family memory, an account of an individual's fate that goes beyond the purely factual framework is impressive. However, it remains to be seen whether the first-person narrative of an infant is really the appropriate form.
