Summary
The work edited by Thilo Scholle and Mike Schmeitzner provides an extremely relevant contribution to the history of political ideas that goes beyond purely historical considerations. The careful examination of Heller's thinking impressively demonstrates how relevant his thoughts on the social constitutional state and the defence of democracy in the face of authoritarian tendencies still are today. The editors succeed in focussing on Heller as a pioneer of a defensive and at the same time socially embedded democracy and thus make it clear how fruitful and necessary the rediscovery of recent democratic theory is for the current political debate.
