Summary

Wolfgang Benz's book “Exile” is a vividly told story of German exile during the National Socialist era. In his biographical digressions, the experiences of the exiles become comprehensible: from forced flight and expulsion, to expatriation and plundering, to arriving in a foreign country where one was not necessarily welcome. In view of the present, in which the call for rigorous isolation is becoming ever louder, the book is also an appeal for the rule of law and humane treatment of people fleeing dictatorships and poverty and seeking protection in Europe.
