Summary

The study offers a differentiated contribution to (social) education and inequality research. It opens up a view of social diversity in teacher training programmes and vividly conveys the mechanisms of social reproduction at teacher training colleges. Although the empirical basis is somewhat dated and the theoretical framework remains closely orientated towards Bourdieu, the work is nevertheless convincing due to its analytical sharpness and methodological precision. The book expands higher education didactic discourses by understanding social background as a central structural principle of pedagogical professionalisation. It is a challenging but necessary work - of equally high theoretical density and political relevance.
