Summary

The ideal of self-determination has not become obsolete even in postmodern or poststructuralist times, but it requires a reformulation in keeping with the times – and can then also provide valuable assistance in focusing political education. Education, understood as the capacity for self-determination, manifests itself politically in citizens who are not dependent on the opinions of others, but who are capable of political judgement, intervention and action.
