Summary

Sebastian Huhnholz has set a new benchmark with his book, both in terms of Weberexegesis and with regard to the sociological implications of Weber’s work, were it to be read correctly ‘according to the complete works’. Huhnholz demonstrates a profound knowledge of the historical context and of Weber’s work, which reflects this context, as well as of the history of its reception from Weber’s lifetime right through to the Bonn Republic. It helps to give the topics of taxation and fiscal organisation – which at first glance may seem specialised – the place they deserve: namely, as the analytical focal point of the relationship between governance and the economy. To interpret the book merely as a contribution to Weber exegesis would be far too narrow a view: it has far-reaching relevance for an integrative theory of economy and society – a theory that remains underdeveloped to this day.
