Summary
The book by Christian Stecker ‘Without the straitjacket of coalition politics and firewalls: How flexible majorities strengthen democracy’ contains astute analyses of the state of German (coalition) democracy, highlights its shortcomings and draws inspiration for solutions from case studies in other countries. Whilst reading, one senses the “author’s enthusiasm for a thematic democracy with flexible majorities” (p. 12), which, however, sometimes leads him to search too doggedly within this framework for solutions to the flaws in German democracy, whilst at times excluding from his argumentation the fundamental rules of democracy that are binding on all parties. Nevertheless, this book will provide food for thought amongst fellow experts as well as sparking potentially heated discussions at the regulars’ table amongst politically interested, well-read patrons.
