Call for Papers

Frist: 28.02.2022

This year’s theme focuses on new research and theoretical contributions that center around weight stigma, law, and policy. We encourage abstracts that offer novel and fresh insights and/or address existing gaps and open questions about law and policy in the widest sense.

We invite contributions across a wide range of disciplines and methodological and theoretical approaches. International voices discussing the situation in countries other than the US are particularly welcome. Equally so are intersectional approaches and perspectives from other marginalized groups on weight-related legal and/or political struggles.

We are accepting abstracts for sessions, oral presentations and posters on subjects related to weight stigma including, but not limited to:

  • fatness, law, and the limits of law
  • history of legal protections in other marginalized groups and implications for fat rights
  • fat people as legal subjects/fat people in court
  • intersecting identities, fatness, and law/legal theory
  • “anti-obesity” policies, public health, and healthcare
  • fatness, bullying, and the right to education
  • fatness and various areas of law (employment law, immigration law, insurance law, criminal law, youth welfare law etc.)
  • fatness and the political landscape
  • fat activism in law and policy

Contributions on new and emerging research outside the theme are also welcome. Students are especially encouraged to submit proposals.

There are prizes for the best oral presentation and best poster.

Conference sessions

Deadline: Mon 28 Feb 2022, midnight (GMT)

Conference session formats include brief symposia, workshops, or other format that may be of interest to delegates, including debates, educational sessions, media, performance, etc. In general, all sessions should last 60 minutes. If your idea involves a single speaker or shorter presentation, please let us know how much time you think you will need – we may bundle related submissions together into a 1-hour session.

A brief symposium is a series of linked talks that aim to give a broad scientific overview of a topic and time for discussion. For symposia abstracts, please include details of your topic and suggested speakers in the abstract submission form. Workshops should involve some kind of training or professional development. For workshop suggestions, please outline the topic, format, speaker(s), and learning objectives.

For other formats, please just tell us about your ideas and what you would like to do – this doesn’t have to be in a formal abstract style.

Oral presentations*

Deadline: Mon 28 Feb 2022, midnight (GMT)

Oral presentations will last for 10 minutes, including time for questions. If you wish to give a longer presentation, please submit into the Other Formats category.

*Oral presentation slots are limited. When submitting an abstract for an oral presentation, please indicate whether you would be happy to present as a poster if your application for an oral slot is unsuccessful. This will not influence your chances of being awarded an oral presentation slot. Additionally, to assist with advanced planning and funding applications, if you submit an oral/poster abstract, you will be notified if you have been accepted for at least a poster presentation within one week of submission. Your abstract will still be submitted into the review pool for oral presentations, with final decisions after the oral deadline.
